BRAC USA grew out of a small relief effort after the war of liberation in 1971 in Bangladesh. Susan explains how the organization began in Bangladesh and became a development and educational organization helping individuals to bring themselves out of poverty through the offering of microfinancing and education. BRAC has reportedly helped over 126 million people in multiple countries.

BRAC runs programs to alleviate poverty using microfinance, education, healthcare, legal services, community empowerment, and other methods
