Full Interview – Dr. Klaus Kleinfeld

Dr. Klaus Kleinfeld (Author, Investor & Former CEO at Alcoa)

Today we’re joined by Dr. Claus Kleinfeld — global business leader, investor, entrepreneur, and author of Leading to Thrive. He has led major global companies, advised world leaders, and now focuses on innovation, investing, and leadership development.

Dr. Kleinfeld began his career in Germany, moving from consulting to the pharmaceutical industry, then spending 20 years at Siemens, ultimately serving as its global CEO. He later led Alcoa, split it into two companies, and now invests in technology and biotech ventures while coaching CEOs.

In Leading to Thrive, he introduces the concept of the “inner game” and “outer game” of leadership. The inner game focuses on energy — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual — while the outer game covers strategy, teams, and execution. His core message: sustainable success comes from managing and replenishing energy, not constant pushing.

He challenges the traditional “ultramarathon” view of leadership, suggesting instead that life is a series of focused sprints followed by intentional recovery. Purpose, he says, acts like a laser — focusing energy into meaningful impact.

Dr. Kleinfeld also discusses AI, calling it both exciting and concerning. As AI transforms industries, he believes leaders must stay curious, ask better questions, think critically, and stay close to the source of problems rather than relying solely on filtered reports.

His advice to leaders: protect your energy, build micro-habits to recharge, stay present with family and teams, and never stop asking questions.

Thank you for joining us on Sarder TV.
